Stand for Democracy! Resist Tyranny!
This betrays the sovereign will of millions of Filipinos that overthrew the Marcos fascist dictatorship after 14 years of arduous struggle throughout the country. Honoring the dictator and his rule is contemptuous of the sufferings of the Filipino people denied of fundamental rights. This is trivializing the murder, forced disappearance; all the forms of torture, including rape of women, and imprisonment inflicted on hundreds of thousands who resisted martial rule. This is a mockery of the continuing trauma of former political prisoners and of families, especially those who are still searching for the remains or hidden graves of their missing loved ones. This ridicules the difficulties endured by millions of people, especially in the countryside, who until now live the trauma of militarization.
Duterte’s call for the people to “forget” is to condone the crimes the dictator, his family and cronies committed. The people will not forget their crimes, which include the plunder and stashing away of billions of dollars’ worth from the country’s coffers.
No, we cannot and should not forget, much more forgive. The long nightmare of Marcos rule, permanently etched in our collective memory as a people, moves us not to abandon the fight for justice.

More importantly, it welds us to resist any tyrannical rule.
Resisting tyranny, however, demands vigilance. Every instance tyranny lurks should be exposed and opposed. Our gains in the struggle for democracy should be safely guarded.
We now confront a reality that is fraught with dangers and challenges.
The wishes of the Marcoses, which Duterte honors as his payback for their support for his winning the Presidency, tell more. These indicate they have crept back to power. Duterte has, in fact, blatantly admitted that he idolizes and emulates the late dictator. And, the Duterte Youth recently echoed this and the revision of history, which Bongbong Marcos himself barefacedly spoke of during his campaign. They told a tale that the “best chapter of the nation’s past” is the dark period of Marcos dictatorship. These cast a looming shadow of tyrannical rule.
Signs of “trying times” have been accumulating and repeating since July 1. We must raise our vigilance to resist tyranny as it rears its ugly head. Let us keep up asserting and defending our human, democratic and sovereign rights as a people.
From this date, when we give honor and tribute to one of our true and great heroes, Andres Bonifacio, let us stand and continue to keep up the fight for freedom and democracy by resisting tyranny.
